How to Season a New Cast Iron Skillet
The full seasoning routine on a brand-new skillet — scrub, dry, oil and bake — so it comes out glossy, non-stick and ready for anything.
Steps
- 1
Scrub the new skillet with warm water and a sponge to remove the factory coating residue.
- 2
Dry it completely with a towel — no moisture left anywhere.
- 3
Rub a thin coat of oil over the entire skillet, inside and out, and wipe away the excess.
- 4
Bake the skillet upside down in the oven to polymerize the oil.
- 5
Let it cool — the surface should come out dark and glossy. Repeat the oil-and-bake cycle to deepen the seasoning.
