Connect & Remove a Bike Chain with Quick Links
The cleanest, simplest way to join and split a chain — a pair of quick links and quick-link pliers, demonstrated on the bench.
Steps
- 1
Fit one quick-link half into the left side of the chain, the other into the right.
- 2
Pull the halves together, locate the pins in the holes, and slide into place — a bit of brute force is normal.
- 3
Lock it: apply the brakes and press the crank with your foot. The link should look like every other pin.
- 4
To remove: find the quick link and rotate it to the bottom of the chainline for easy access.
- 5
Place quick-link pliers either side of the link and squeeze — it pops free.
- 6
Always check: the quick link matches your chain speed (8/9/10/11/12 all differ), and note any directional markings before installing.
